Very important question

Thursday, May 13, 2010
I am taking a poll. A supremely important poll. Dealing with something I've been wondering about for a long time. And by that I mean, for about the last 5 minutes.

As I've mentioned before, once upon a time I used to wear pajamas everywhere. That time was called "college," and even though it was pretty normal to walk around the Tufts campus in your flannel pants with little sheep on them, I still kind of look back on that time and think, "Wait...really?" I mean, I met with professors in pajamas! Who does that?

Full disclosure: I wish I could still do that. But I won't.

Anyhoo, I'm wondering about another one of my habits and whether or not it is horrifically socially inappropriate, along the lines of wearing pajamas outside the house. Because it seems all fine and dandy to me, but since I pretty much always look like a hot mess, maybe I don't realize that I shouldn't be doing it.

My question, friends, is about going outside with wet hair. Yay or nay?

Note: I do not own a hair dryer. I know, I am officially kicked out of being a girl. But really. I strive to have the most low maintenance getting ready regimen that I can and who has time for that? Drying my hair turns it into an 80's style puffball and if you think I'm going to blowdry my hair and THEN spend the requisite 40 minutes to straighten it (yes, I own a flat iron. Last time I used it...unclear. And actually it's a wet-to-dry flat iron which eliminates the need for the hair dryer but I am still wholly unwilling to spend time using it), you...don't know me very well.

The point is, I either go outside with wet hair or I wait inside until it dries which takes about 6 millennia on my hair and I got places to go, man!

Am I going to one day look back upon this time, as I currently look back upon college, and think to myself, "Holy Jesus what was I doing?" Or is it okay for me to show my wet locks in public? I mean, at least this signifies to the world that I shower, right?

I really hope that the answer is "yes." I have never once questioned my wet hair, and now I'm self conscious. I mean, I don't show up to work with wet hair (it's usually dry by then) and usually, if it's still wet, I'll pull it back...

My hair puffballs if I let it dry NATURALLY - it only likes water with salt in it, which gives it pretty ringlets. After it's been washed and dried naturally, it looks like seven shades of crap. So I CAN'T leave the house without drying it.

In theory. I HAVE in practice did it before...

Try having fine, flat hair. I have to wash it every day, and blow dry and straighten it. But it's quick to do (15 minutes or so) because it's so fine. If I left the house with it wet I'd walk around with elf ears all day, with the way my hair dries naturally. And ponytails are even a struggle with my hair. It ends up quicker just to wash/blowdry/straighten it than make it look decent put up.

Love the blog! Not sure how I found it, but I'm enjoying what I'm reading so far!

Personally, I've gone to Target quick with my hair half dried and I feel a little ridiculous. Like I didn't care enough about my appearance to look totally presentable. My reaction to seeing someone who hasn't dried their hair is "uhh, really? Nice look." I'll admit that when I go with half dried hair, I think "well at least I showered" too. lol. But idk. If we're talking all out wet hair, then no. If it's half dried/can't really tell- yes.

Dude, welcome to my life. I generally leave the house with wet hair. Curls/waves look best when you air dry them and I don't think anyone judges you for leaving the house with wet hair.

Personally, I don't like leaving the house with wet hair. But then, I also have persnickety curly hair - which means short of investing in a really good diffuser I have to let my hair air dry. Which means if I have a hot date, I have to plan when I'm going to take my shower then schedule the rest of the day accordingly.

Because it is all about my hair.

Although, I think if it's a little damp and you pull it back into a bun or something no one's really going to judge. If there's still water dripping off it though... at least towel dry it first. ;-)

Ah yes... I know where you're coming from. You might remember that I used to tame my curls with a hair dryer/flat iron combo almost all the time freshman year at Tufts (also a big fan of wearing pjs to class then). I also have curly/wavy hair. And I hate - HATE - spending time dealing with it. Even combing conditioner through it in the shower pisses me off. So I use a couple of hair products that I put directly in my wet hair after I shower (some anti-humidity thing from Aveda, thus avoiding pullballyness) and something silicone based (which tames the madness). I let it hair dry while I get dressed/ready, and before going out, I blow dry for under 2 minutes. It doesnt make it all dry, but at least it's not totally wet - and it actually dries better, with more form. The regimen takes less than 3 min combined, and it's been really working for me. If you pull it back into a pony tail/bun when it's wet, it'll end up looking weird... at least that's the case for me.
