Sweatpants clubbing

Tuesday, January 31, 2012
When I was in college, a sorority sister and I came up with the idea for what we called "sweatpants clubbing."

The idea behind sweatpants clubbing was simple. Clubbing is fun, because dancing and generally being foolish to pop and hip hop music is fun. But there are a few parts of clubbing that are not fun. They are:

1) Wearing heels and hurting your feet
2) Wearing some kind of cute outfit that ends up riding up or falling down or boobs popping out or bra straps showing or SO TIGHT NEED AIR or the myriad other things that can go wrong when you try to look nice (just me?).
3) Gross guys coming up behind you and trying to sketch all up in your business when all you want to do is jam out
4) See #3. It bears repeating how annoying this is.
5) Cover charges, yuck
6) Drinks are expensive

Sweatpants clubbing, you see, gets rid of all of these problems. Sweatpants clubbing is girls only, so there are no creepsters. It is completely free, as it takes place in the basement of our sorority house, and you wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Hence, the sweatpants. You can drink whatever you want to, or not drink at all.

It was glorious. But that was then, and this is now, and I don't have a sorority house basement in to host sweatpants clubbing anymore.

Until I discovered this: Dance Dance Party Party

DDPP is where a group of women get together and dance for an hour or so. That's it. There are only 3 rules to DDPP:

1) No boys
2) No booze
3) No judgment

They recommend that you wear workout clothes since you'll get sweaty, and they seem to mean it when they say "no judgment" which means you can bust out your best (or worst) moves and no one will care.

There's one in New York and I am kind of dying to try this. Sweatpants clubbing returns! I can't wait.

My fellow Jumbos will know that I was just singing the Tufts fight song. You will also know that no one actually knows any of the other words, except maybe "Hoorah!...something something...brown and blue!" Anyway.

So apparently I graduated college 5 years ago. What? Where has the time gone? Wasn't it just yesterday that I was living in my sorority house, thinking of witty AIM away messages, and occasionally even going to class?

This weekend I had the lovely opportunity to partake in class of OHHHHH FIVE reunion events. It was a particularly interesting time for me seeing as my business school graduation is tomorrow and my time here has only made me appreciate Tufts more. I mean, SO MUCH MORE. So while everyone was all "Congrats! You're graduating!" I was all "I LOVE AND MISS TUFTS SO MUCH IT HURTS."

Alumni weekend was a big boozy dance party nostalgic mess. Tufts classed it up in a major way and somehow managed to not ask us for money even once. We ate and drank and ran around the Tufts campus pointing out everything that changed since we left and took pictures by old dorm rooms. And then we drank some more, and then we laughed about how we showed up to every event just late enough so as to miss the a cappella performances, and I discovered that one of my friends was apparently the world's biggest fan of The Sing-Off because she knew every member of the Beelzebubs and which songs they sang on the show.

One excellent part was that Friday was the first day off that I had in almost 30 days, and I felt really weird being in a room with tons of caterers and not actually being one of them. And then I realized that even though the company I work for doesn't work at Tufts, I knew one of the bartenders from working at a few super huge events that required staff from multiple companies.

Another excellent part was when we finally realized that our 5 year reunion was NOT going to entail 2 full days of "Hey...you look familiar...we had a class together or..maybe were in some kind of group together or..something...right?" Though there certainly was some of that, for the most part people were just excited to see the people they actually knew, and we got to spend our time hugging and screaming and being excited to be around old friends instead of trying to reconnect with people with whom we never really connected in the first place.

Overall, it was a fabulous weekend that only reinforced to me how much my alma mater is better than yours (just kidding. Not really) and how much I wish I could still be in college. It also reinforced that I made the right decision in sticking around Boston instead of joining all you lovelies in Vegas (the whole "graduating tomorrow" thing kind of maybe also had a big part in that as my parents would probably not appreciate coming up to Boston today and having me be on a plane home).

For now, I am le tired. And maybe need to clean my apartment because my parents are coming and um, GRADUATION TOMORROW. Ack.

On Saturday night, I was bartending at a wedding. It was a pretty great wedding overall. The crowd was fun, I made a lot of money even though I wasn't allowed to put out a tip jar, and the staff working with me was super helpful.

I was standing behind the bar, minding my business, when all of a sudden the DJ got on the mic and made the following announcement:

"Will everyone who went to Tufts University please gather on the dance floor for a picture? Everyone who went to Tufts, please gather on the dance floor for a group photo."

WHAAAAT?

For a second I forgot whether I was working or attending this wedding seeing as the majority of the weddings I go to are Tufts weddings. But no, I was definitely working.

As everyone gathered for the picture, I scanned faces to see if I knew anyone. I didn't. Afterwards, one of the guys from the group came up to the bar, so I asked him about Tufts and it turns out the groom graduated from there in 2000. I told him I graduated in 2005 and he said I should have joined them for the picture. I'm sad I didn't think of this first, and even more sad that even if I had thought of it at the time, I knew I wouldn't have had the balls to run out there and jump in the photo. Doh.

Over the course of the night I had a number of great Tufts conversations with some fellow Jumbos. We bonded over having the same Philosophy professors, someone complained about the sheer volume of Tufts mail they receive (and told me I was the smartest person ever when I said that my Tufts mail goes to my parents' house), and another confessed that he never actually graduated even though they let him walk.

Overall, it was nice to have a reason to talk to some of the guests as opposed to just serving them drinks. Plus, talking about Tufts is one of my favorite things ever. So, double win. And maybe it got me some more tips. Triple win.
