A few weeks ago, some classmates and I were playing softball on the first sunny Saturday of the year. One of the guys playing said, "Summer officially starts when I can go outside, play sports and drink beer. In a t-shirt."
Though I definitely had fun drinking beer and playing softball, that doesn't signify the start of summer for me. Yet I have a similar, very specific day which tells me that at last, winter is over. That event, my friends, is the first New York street fair.
If you've never been to a Manhattan street fair in the summer, you're totally missing out. You can buy any number of awesome things, ranging from 2 dollar jewelry to what is likely stolen hundreds-of-thread-count linens to bongo drums. And the food? Heaven. There's $1 Thai food, fried Oreos, crepes, gyros, and oh, so much more.
The street fair travels throughout the city, landing on a different avenue every weekend. And even though 99% of the stuff is the same, I never get tired of walking up and down seeing what's there.
I'm in New York for the weekend, pretending to to work while I actually meet up with friends, celebrate some birthdays and otherwise revel in this wonderful city. Yesterday morning, my friend/wifer Julie, whose apartment I am pretty much taking hostage of for the weekend, came home from running some errands.
"Arielle, I saw something that's going to make you happy."
"What?"
"A STREET FAIR!"
"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!"
My day was made. I definitely visited the street fair on 3 separate occasions yesterday seeing as it was super close to Julie's apartment.
Summer tiiiiiiiiiiiime and the livin is AWESOME!
P.S. Julie says I should tell the world that I'm blogging from her couch. So, world: I am blogging from Julie's couch. Julie also says, "Write that I'm awesome." Julie is awesome. The end.

Arielle, I couldn't agree more with you about the street fairs!
Do you Twitter?
First of all, "Hi Julie!"
And secondly, for me, summer starts when I get sunburnt. From actual sun, as opposed to a sunbed.
Which was today!
So its summer. Woohoo!!!
For me the start of summer is the first beach-worthy day of the season. While it may not be bikini-all-day weather, if it's warm enough to lie out, to wade in the water and play a little frisbee then it's officially summer.
OMG. Which street fair did you visit? I was totally at the one by Washington Square Park yesterday. I ate a $4 mozzarepa, $5 Thai combo plate, and $2 pink lemonade... then I wanted to punch myself because I kept seeing $1 pink lemonades. Sigh.
