If I had to choose only one non-American cuisine from which to eat for the rest of my life, it would be Indian food. Without question. Despite my love of burritos, general tso's chicken, shwarma, pad thai, and gnocchi, my love of Indian food trumps them all. It began innocently enough, during my freshman year of college when a friend gathered a few of us Indian food virgins and ordered a crapload of food to be eaten picnic-style on the floor of her dorm room. I never looked back.
The majority of the Indian food I've eaten has been in restaurants, with a few brief exceptions at my old office. We took turns making snacks for our weekly team meeting, and one coworker always used to make Indian food that I had never seen in any restaurants. And I'd be like, "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER HOLY DELICIOUSNESS," at which point she would tell me that that's what they eat off street carts in India. Indian street food > American street food.
One of my best friends from school is Indian, and she is all too happy to bring me along to her favorite restaurants in Boston. For her, it's a chance to eat good food that reminds her of home. For me, it's a chance to stuff my face with naan and samosas and chicken tikka masala and then more naan. Plus, we totally get better treatment from the staff because she's there.
Recently, my friend and I were using up my Groupon to Mela, and I of course was in heaven, and she said that next time she goes home I should come with her. And she would take me around Mumbai and I could eat all the delicious food I wanted. Though she isn't going home for probably a year, and when she does I doubt I'll be able to afford it, this plan sounds like pretty much the best thing ever. EVER.
I think I get this from my parents. Though they've never really openly expressed any similar passion for Indian food, they did quit their jobs and hitchhike around India for 5 months in lieu of a traditional honeymoon. So, there's that.
And now I'm going to go dream about curry. Yum.

how cool would it be to take 5 months and trek around india!? i haven't yet developed a huge taste for Indian food, but mexican food? please, i could survive on tacos and chips and salsa for the rest of my life.
I don't really like spicy food unfortunately. But I DO like a good chicken korma and pilau rice with naan bread and poppadoms. Yum. :)
Indian food is the type of food I have always wanted to love, but just can't. I have liked a dish from Punjabi Dhaba though, hopefully it will open the flood gates.
