It's the summer of music up in these parts, and this past weekend gave me 3 days of auditory joy in the form of the Firefly Festival in Delaware.
While it was hardly my first festival, it was the first one I went to that was 3 days long, and the first where I camped on site. And let me tell you, my friends, it did not disappoint.
The first really awesome thing about Firefly was that it took 10 hours to get there. HAHAH THAT IS A LIE THIS WAS A TERRIBLE THING.
For those who need a frame of reference, it took us under 3 hours to get home. So yeah, there was a bit of a traffic situation.** But eventually we got there, successfully set up our tent, I changed into my Firefly t-shirt (see below) and we went to go see the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
RHCP totally killed it, but this goes without saying. Have you ever seen them live? I hadn't, but they were everything I expected they would be.
I'm not going to give a recap of every single band or artist because no one cares. But here's a list of who I caught, with comments where necessary.
Krewella
Kendrick Lamar - if he did that song where he talks about how he wishes his dick was as big as the Eiffel Tower ("so I could fuck the world for 72 hours") I missed it and I'm sad because that's my favorite song of his. It is very poignant and obviously speaks to the depths of my soul.
MGMT
Azealia Banks - we caught about 1.5 songs, including half of 212, which is the only song of hers that anyone cares about. It sounded a little screamy.
Tom Petty - SO SO GOOD OBVIOUSLY
The White Panda
Matt and Kim - they're awesome as it is, but then they played The Next Episode (you know, the Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg song) on keyboards and it MADE MY LIFE
Dispatch - not to sound like the hipsteriest hipster of all time, but I've hated Dispatch since before they were cool, and I continue to hate them now that they are no longer cool
Passion Pit
Vampire Weekend
So great. All of it.
People that I would have liked to have seen but didn't either due to aforementioned traffic, or scheduling conflicts, or other "nothing went as planned" moments, were:
Ellie Goulding
Calvin Harris
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Ben Harper
Zedd
Public Enemy
Dan Deacon
Ah well.
Part of what made the festival so great was the crowd, comprised of a bunch of chill people looking to have a good time. There were people throwing glowsticks in the air, a guy behind me with a giant bubble wand, a man in a full, light-up firefly costume, and a huge Bob Saget head, just to name a few highlights.
Firefly also featured some non-music attractions - a shady area with hammocks to rest in, an arcade with free skeeball, pinball and other games, a brewery, a vineyard, a wooded area with fun lights at night, and more. There really was something for everyone, unless, I suppose, you don't like music or fun. If that's the case, you probably wouldn't have enjoyed it, and you should probably also stop reading my blog.
In summary: music was great, people were great, I got very sunburned and sweaty and dirty, Bob Saget was there, and good times were had by all. Bring on Lollapalooza!
** The only good thing about the horrible traffic was that, as my friend drove and I sat shotgun, I got to indulge in my new favorite obsession - reading the comments of angry Facebookers. One day I may write a blog post about this because I legitimately think it's becoming a problem, but..there are so many hilarious angry people commenting on pages all the time! I can't pull myself away.
