My civic blonde moment

Wednesday, November 3, 2010
When I woke up yesterday, after completing my Tuesday morning ritual of catching up on Google reader, email, Facebook and the previous night's Dancing With the Stars, I buckled down to do my voting research.

You see, there weren't any races here in my part of NJ that were particularly publicized. I wanted to do my civic duty but I wanted to know what I was doing. So I used the old Google to find out what was up with the candidates and made my choices. I felt like a good person. A good, patriotic, educated person.

Imagine my surprise when I walked into the little voting booth, pulled the curtain closed behind me, and didn't recognize any names.

Apparently I had done all my research for the wrong district.

WOH WOHHHHHHHHHH

So I did the only thing I could really do in that situation - I voted along party lines. I mean, there's a good chance I would have ended up voting for those people anyway. But I still felt like a traitor to my own ideals because I would never advise someone to vote blindly by party affiliation and nothing else.

And I mean, there was no way I was going to...NOT vote. I'm like a 4 year old. Must! Press! Buttons!

At least I was ready to rock NJ's one state ballot question.

They didn't have any "I voted!" stickers at my polling place. I was a little sad about it (because, again, 4 year old - STICKERS!), but I realized that considering my idiocy, I didn't totally deserve one.

Next time, Gadget. Next time.

Arielle's Halloween rules

Tuesday, November 2, 2010
Happy November, everyone! As you are all aware, the end of October means Halloween, and even though I rarely celebrated as a child (Jew school frowns upon that sort of thing), as an adult it quickly became one of my favorite holidays. Candy? Parades? Parties? Costumes? Parties in costumes? FOR. THE. WIN.

This brings me to my few very simple rules for partaking in the wonder that is dressing up on Halloween:

1. If you are going to dress up, DRESS UP. If you're not dressing up, own it. To the person who walked into the party on Friday night in totally normal clothes and devil horns: I hate you. Don't even bother with the damn horns. Just tell people you're too lame or too lazy or just hate costumes. Go big or go home!

2. If you're going to bother putting effort into a costume, you should probably do something that will be recognized by...someone. If someone out there doesn't watch Jersey Shore and thus has no idea who you are with your poof and fuzzy slippers, that's cool. But if your costume is too conceptual, no one is going to be impressed. And by "no one" I refer to myself. I am not impressed.

In any case, repeating Halloween costumes is thankfully NOT against my rules, since this year was the second time I repeated a costume. I recycled 2004's mildly slutty Santa Claus outfit in 2005, and on Saturday and Sunday I revisited last year's Little Mermaid outfit. For Friday night, though, Lacey and I did this:

BLUE BARRACUDAS! Freaking amazing. We even had homemade name tags and pendants of life! We are so insanely excited about these costumes that we're going to try to find some scavenger hunts to do in NYC (I did 2 this summer/fall) where we can wear these again. Because Legends of the Hidden Temple is SO worthy of recycling.

I love birthdays

Monday, October 25, 2010
As some of you know, I turned 27 on Sunday. Despite the fact that I'm pretty much done with all significant birthdays aside from the depressing milestones like 30 and 40, I still love my birthday.

Many of my contemporaries have ceased to care about birthdays. This makes no sense to me. As introverted as I am, I love my friends with a passion and find no greater joy in the one day of the year where I hear from seemingly all of them at once. I love the outpouring of well wishes that come in the form of emails, calls, texts, and Facebook wall posts (big emphasis on that last one, people blew up my wall like crazy this year and I LOVE EVERYONE SO MUCH FOR IT YOU MAKE MY COLD-HEARTED SELF FEEL ALL WARM AND FUZZY INSIDE).

More importantly, I love that my birthday brings the one day a year where I can actually motivate a large group of people to all assemble in the same place (if I could do this normally, my birthday wouldn't mean nearly as much to me). Everywhere I turn it's a new person I wish I spent more time with: High school friends! College friends! Sorority friends! (Who are also college friends, but whatevs) Friends by association that I also love spending time with but with whom I'm not close enough to spend time without incorporating that middle man/woman!

This brings me to the birthday celebration. I have been fortunate to be able to share my birthday party with my good friend and ex-Facebook wife Julie for the past 5 years, and between her friends and my friends (which obviously overlap quite a bit) we always get a fun (understatement!) group together.

This year, in the cab on the way to the bar, 45 minutes late to our own party as usual, someone asked me which of our birthday parties was my favorite. And so I've decided to rank them (FYI I have consulted with Julie and we agree on this ranking).

In last place by quite a long shot, still a fun night but the least fun by far, was double birthday party #3, our 25th birthday:

In 4th place, the very first party, our 23rd (I think this picture is totally adorable):

In 3rd, this year's party, our 27th (Julie looks super cute. I do not):

In second place is our 26th birthday (if you look closely you can spot my friend Anna, Crapface, and Nicole in the background):

While it's hard to top a mechanical bull and copious amounts of sweet tea vodka, the only thing that could possibly overtake it is our 24th birthday COSTUME PARTY. I like this picture because you can see that Julie and I decided to go in a cop/criminal couples costume, but Julie is clearly not wearing her own hat, my hat is on wrong, and of course, Lacey and Dave make an appearance! I should also mention that this is my favorite party despite the fact that it resulted in me vomiting for about 5 hours. So that's saying a lot.

So there you have it. 5 years of birthday parties and some of my favorite memories pretty much ever. And if you haven't ever experienced the wonder that is JULIE AND ARIELLE'S ANNUAL SUPERMEGAAWESOME BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA, get on it.

And of course, today is my wifer's actual birthday, so, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JULIE!! Can't wait for the sixth annual!

Anyone else still have a huge, insane, unabashed love for their birthday?
